I thought I was done talking about Santa’s Village. With a full agenda, my focus has already shifted to the next projects we’re building with our community, along with the planned workshops and events for this year. But then I received a message from a mom that stopped me in my tracks. It reminded me of two simple but powerful truths: what’s important is family, memories, and shared experiences — not the gift you may or may not receive — and that the people around us truly matter. This story is exactly why we do what we do, and why I want to say thank you again to everyone who volunteered, supported, partnered, and/or donated to make Santa’s Village possible. “The holidays can be expensive, and they are not always easy for every family, especially mine. For some parents, events like Santa’s Village are the only opportunity they have to give their children a chance to experience the magic of Christmas. Free Santa photos, a cup of hot cocoa, and simple moments of joy can mean everything,” said Christina, an event attendee.
Christina was also encouraged by the facilitation of collective tools that Santa’s Village provided for visitors. “At the same time, families were able to connect with outreach organizations, meet other parents, and learn about resources available in our community,” she said. “Santa’s Village reminded us that Christmas spirit doesn’t come from how much you spend, it comes from connection, inclusion, and making sure every child feels seen.”
Moments like this are powerful, but they don’t happen by accident. They happen when a community shows up for itself — when neighbors talk to neighbors about what’s malfunctioning, when volunteers get involved, when partners collaborate — and when we see real issues get addressed, together.
That collaborative effort is at the heart of Highway City Community Development and the holistic values we’re built on — education, health, housing, and community connection — all working together for the well-being of our West Fresno neighborhoods. “HCCD is a vital resource for communities West of Highway 99. It is a place where strangers become neighbors, and selfless acts of community activism bring awareness for the betterment of All who reside here. The center builds up those in need and fills the gaps for families with wellness checks for children,” said Manuela, HCCD Community Resident volunteer, advocate, and organizer.” HCCD has become a cornerstone within the community, and I look forward to how they will continue to grow and serve.”
