The Art of Weaving Communities into Cohesive Social Entities

To weave is to support and facilitate the formation of significant relationships between neighbors, which ultimately contributes to rebuilding the social trust once shared in our communities. Weaving is best described with four qualities: it should be local and unify people who reside in the same place; it is a mutual act in that everyone who joins is bringing their own strengths and can both give or receive; it is welcoming and encourages people to join as they are; and it is a continuous act because it recognizes that deep relationships are born out of ongoing engagement. At the core, a strong Weaver is someone who not only strives to strengthen their community — but is aware of the importance of how that is achieved and knows that deep bonds are at the core of that work.

Every day our communities are negatively impacted by local, statewide, and national decisions made on their behalf. While we push these external forces to work in our best interest, an immediate way we can exercise our power is through the forging of meaningful bonds with one another. Choosing to connect with each other and share joy, especially in times of economic and political turmoil, recognizes our shared humanity and can be the antidote to the intensified division. For this reason, Fresno DRIVE is excited to be a Community Host for the 2026 Weaver Awards, as made possible by Weave: The Social Fabric Project by the Aspen Institute and looks forward to contributing $2,500 each to 20 select Weavers.

At Fresno DRIVE, we know that creating an economy for all is not possible, without everyone electing to band together. We also know how important trust and relationship-building are for propelling people to act and enabling collaboration in the first place. By recognizing the accomplishments of individual Weavers through the upcoming Weaver Awards, we are honoring the community strengths that exist outside of DRIVE, lighting sparks of hope, and hopefully inspiring more residents to weave across their neighborhoods. When we are unified, we can achieve an economy where everyone can thrive.
